Bison girls tennis season concludes at state tourney

LINCOLN -- The McCook High School girls tennis team posted four victories and scored 12 points at the Nebraska Class B girls state tennis tournament Thursday.

However, McCook did not place any players in the semifinals and a strong 2007 spring season came to a close.

The Bison's No. 1 doubles team of Melissa Lyster and Amy Lester reached the quarterfinals, but were eliminated.

McCook's No. 2 singles player Hannah Putz won her first two matches and lost in the quarterfinals.

McCook's other entries -- No. 1 singles player Brianna Watkins and the No. 2 doubles team of Cody Korus and Alli Lester -- lost in the first round.

Putz, who was seeded third in No. 2 singles, defeated Lincoln Christian's Kellie Elwood in the first round 6-0, 6-0 and Lexington's Terah Maloley 6-2, 7-5 in the second round. She lost to Scottsbluff's Meghan Klein 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

Putz finished the season with a sparkling 34-6 record.

In No. 1 singles, McCook's Brianna Watkins lost to Alliance's Martie Burke 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. Watkins posted a 10-10 record.

At No. 1 doubles, McCook's Lyster and Amy Lester defeated Lexington's Kelsey Ondrak and Danielle Tuepker 6-1, 7-5 in the first round and Lincoln Christian's Lenore Peterson and Addis Browne 6-4, 6-0 in the second round.

The Lyster-Lester duo fell to Grand Island Central Catholic's Brittany Hanssen and Jill Wagoner 6-0, 6-4, the No. 1 seed, in the quarterfinals. Lyster and Lester finished the season with a 27-9 record.

McCook's No. 2 doubles team of Korus and Alli Lester lost to No. 5 seed Sandi Pollard and Mallory Johnsen of Beatrice 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) in the first round. The Korus-Lester duo finished the season with a 9-4 record.
