Trenton native bringing Navy jet to Grand Island

GRAND ISLAND -- When an F/A-18 Super Hornet lands at the Central Nebraska Regional Airport on Saturday for Grand Island's Armed Forces Weekend, Navy Lt. Christina Hidy will climb down from the cockpit.

A Trenton native, Hidy, daughter of Barb Hidy of Trenton and Bill Hidy of Danbury, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a Naval ROTC scholarship, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy.

She reported to NAS Pensacola in February 2001 and received her Naval Flight Officer Wings of Gold in July 2002.

She reported to VF-101 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., for training as a radar intercept officer in the F-14 Tomcat, and in August 2003, reported to her first fleet assignment with VF-211, the Fighting Checkmates.

There, she completed two deployments to the Arabian Sea aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

With the retirement of the F-14, VFA-211 aviators transitioned to the F/A-18F Super Hornet with Lt. Hidy completing qualifications as a weapon systems officer in 2005. At VFA-211, she received a qualification as a forward air controller (airborne), the Brutus Junior Officer Leadership Award, and a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

In September 2006, Lt. Hidy reported to VFA-106, the Gladiators, where she is an instructor in the Fleet Replacement Squadron.

Also on display will be static displays of other military aircraft and vehicles such as a Navy T-34C, C-17, C-130, KC-135, Marine training aircraft, Marine TH-57 helicopter, National Guard Chinook and Huey helicopters and more.

Gates are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, an honorary service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, and gates are open again 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
