ATWOOD -- Richard "Dick" Gene Mays, 59, died Monday (May 7, 2007) at his home in Tehachapi, Calif.

He was born June 19, 1947, in Colby, Kan., to Richard Dean and Marita Faye Mays. He graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1965.

He worked for Beckley Custom Combining while attending Colby Junior College and Fort Hays State University. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1967, and served a four-year term in a C.B. unit. He was stationed in Laos, Adok Island, Alaska and Port Huememe, Calif. After his term in the Navy he returned to college at California Poly Tech, in San Luis Obisco. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science in 1975.

He married Margaret De La Fuente on Dec. 9, 1972. He worked as a farm hand at the Sisquoc Ranch while completing college then worked 11 years on the ranch as Cattle Manager. For 16 years he husbanded the Loop Ranch in Keene, Calif. He finished his working life with General Electric in Tehachapi in wind turbine industry as an electrical assembler.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Merritt Judson Heaton, brother, Darryl Anson Mays and sister, Anita Faye Mays.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son, Merritt and wife, Karrie of Tehachapi, Calif.; parents, Richard Dean and Marita Mays of Leoti, Kan.; brothers, Roland and wife, Linda of Ordway, Colo., Rod and wife, Karen of Leoti, Kan., Jonathan and wife, Stephanie of Brighton, Colo., and Patrick and wife, Valerie of Chelsen,Okla.; sisters, Barbara June and husband, Charles McKay of Hershey, Doris Ann and husband, Eugene Langdon of Leoti, Kan., and Mary Rose and husband, Dwayne Atchley of Branson, Mo.; and two grandsons.

Services will be Friday, 1:30 p.m., Friday at United Methodist Church in Atwood with the Rev. Terry McGuire officiating. Burial will be in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 11.30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the church.

A memorial has been established in his name.

Williams Funeral Home of Atwood is in charge of the arrangements.
