Time to admit mistake and pull out

Thursday, April 12, 2007
As of Wednesday, there were 3,292 American soldiers who have died in Iraq.

As of Wednesday there were 3,292 American families that sent their son or daughter, husband or wife, mother or father, and brother or sister off to war -- never to see them again.

Yet Bush and the Pentagon continue to push for continuing this seemingly un-winnable war. Yesterday, the Pentagon announced that the members of the regular Army will have their tours extended from 12 months to 15 months -- giving the soldiers an extra three month window in which to join the heroes who have already fallen.

The United States will not pull out, according to President Bush, who promises to veto a spending bill that calls for a deadline to withdraw troops from the war-torn country.

But there are those who are pulling out -- not only foreign countries, but Iraqis themselves -- Iraqis who fear for their lives and the lives of their families.

According to a CNN report, one doctor estimates that 80 percent of those serving in his profession have left the country. An architect believes at least 30 percent of his fellow professionals have fled.

The poor and desolate are left to fend for themselves. For them, fleeing the war torn streets of Baghdad is not possible. For some, the only thing they have to look forward to is the death and destruction that continues to surround them.

According to the International Red Cross, the situation for Iraqis is "ever-worsening," and yet the Bush administration continues to insist that this war can be won. In order to do so, he plans to increase the number of troops that will be placed in harms way. He plans to veto a bill that would put a timeline on pulling American troops from the war torn nation. The Pentagon plans on extending the deployment time for the regular Army by three months.

This is a war that will not be won. Not by the Americans, not by the coalitions, not by the Sunnis and not by the Shiites. It will be fought in the streets of Baghdad for years after the troops have been withdrawn, whether they are withdrawn today or in 20 years.

Bush should consider the opinion of the American public. According to recent polls his popularity has fallen to around 34 percent. Granted he doesn't have to worry about re-election promises, but if he wants his party to have any chance in the 2008 elections, he should consider what happened in 2006. The American public made their opinion perfectly clear when Democrats took over both branches of the Legislature in that election.

Bush is on an ego trip that is taking the lives of American soldiers. It's time to put an end to his crazy ego-maniacal trip into the killing fields of this war and admit he made a mistake.

It's time for this administration to bring our soldiers home.
