MCC baseball takes two from NJC, softball splits with NPCC

The McCook Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo., Wednesday at the Jaycee Sports Complex.

MCC defeated NJC 2-1 in 10 innings in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

Chris Reynolds, a sophomore left-handed pitcher from Sheridan, Wyo., was the winning pitcher in the first game. He has a 3-4 record.

Evan Koetter, a freshman southpaw from McCook, was the winner in the second game. He improved his record to 2-0.

The Indians lost 2-0 to Colby Monday and Tuesday's game against Cloud County, Kan., was canceled because of weather.

Grant Seymour, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Westminster, Colo., took the loss in the Colby game. He dropped to 2-3.

MCC, now 15-16 overall and 5-9 in Region IX play, plays doubleheaders at LaJunta, Colo., against Otero Junior College Saturday and Sunday.

The twinbills were originally slated for Friday and Saturday, but were pushed back one day because of weather.

MCC softball

The MCC softball team split a Region IX doubleheader Wednesday with rival North Platte Community College at the Jaycee Sports Complex.

North Platte won the first game 1-0 and the MCC Indians defeated the Knights 5-2 in the nightcap.

McCook pitcher Brianne Nutty struck out seven batters combined in both games. She hit a two-run home run in the second game.

Stacy Gemelli hit a triple and Sarah Babbitt had two RBIs in the second game.

"Our defense was outstanding last night," said MCC softball coach Della Mitchel. "We complimented that performance with strong hitting in the second game.

"This team has always had the potential to be a top contender in Region IX. Last night, they proved that."

MCC improved to 3-19 overall and 3-11 in Region IX play.

NPCC swept MCC 9-6 and 12-1 April 4 at North Platte.

MCC had doubleheaders postponed against Dawson, Mont. (Saturday) and Otero JC (Tuesday) before finally getting to play NPCC.

MCC plays at Western Nebraska Friday, Lamar, Colo., Saturday and Otero JC Sunday.

The Otero twinbill is a makeup date.

The Indians were originally slated to play Garden City, Kan., but that matchup was replaced by the Otero twinbill.

MCC golf

The MCC golf team's home meet slated for April 5-6 was canceled because of cold weather.

No information was available on the Hastings-York Invite Monday and Tuesday.

Weather permitting, the Indians are slated to compete at the Lamar-Otero Invitational today and Friday.

The Indians placed seventh at the Beatrice Invitational March 29-30 with a 703 score.

Brian Lawson led the Indians with a 169 score, followed by Brett Chmiel 175, Sean Sterkel 176 and Joseph Deibler 183.
