AMES, Iowa -- Robert "Bob" Cyril Campbell, 68, died Tuesday (April 3, 2007) at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.
Bob was born Feb. 22, 1939, in McCook, to Cyril and Eunice Campbell. He married LoAnn Bowen on March 9, 1957.
Bob was a graduate of McCook High School where he excelled in basketball, football, baseball, and track. He had developed a love for sports early in life when he served as bat boy for the semi-pro baseball team in McCook.
A 1960 graduate of Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, he was co-captain of the college football team during his senior year. He also coached Junior American Legion baseball during the summer. Bob earned his Master's degree in physical education at the University of Wyoming.
Early in his professional career, Bob taught social studies and coached the high school 8-man football team as well as basketball and track teams at Wallace. In 1962, he developed the elementary physical education program for Oberlin, Elementary School. The Oberlin Jaycees named him Outstanding Young Teacher of 1965.
In 1966, he and his family moved to Ames, where he taught elementary physical education and drivers education. Bob served as an assistant coach for various sports in the Ames Community Schools and coached Little League baseball for many years. He retired from teaching in 1999.
During retirement, Bob loved golfing and playing poker with his many friends. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the United States, especially to visit his children and grandchildren in Maryland, California and Louisiana. All who knew him considered him a gentle, kind friend.
Bob is survived by his wife, LoAnn; three children, Shawn and wife, Sally Campbell of Glen Burnie, Md., Shelby Campbell of San Francisco, Calif., and Syd and wife, Elizabeth Campbell of River Ridge, La.; and nine grandchildren, Bryan, Dylan, Deanna, Leah and Lauren Campbell and Austin, Sydnie, Samantha and Stephen Campbell.
A memorial service will be Saturday, 10 a.m. at Adams Funeral Home in Ames with burial of the cremains at a later date in McCook.
