Velma Caroline Lauer died Wednesday (March 21, 2007) at the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, at the age of 90.
She was born Sept. 13, 1916, at McCook, the daughter of the late Henry C. and Lena S. (Haase) Kisker. Velma grew up in the Ash Creek Community and graduated from Red Willow High School in 1934.
On Sept. 19, 1948, Velma married Herbert Lauer at St. John's Lutheran Church at Ash Creek. They made their home at Lusk, Wyo., before returning to McCook in 1950, where they spent the remainder of their married life. She was employed as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney Co. and DeGroffs department store until retiring in the late 1980's.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Women's League and the Lutheran Quilting Club where she helped complete 90 quilts in one year.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Alvin Kisker and two sisters, Mamie Shields and Vera Schaffert.
Velma is survived by her husband, Herbert Lauer; one son, Ron Lauer and wife, Deb all of McCook; one daughter, Bethene Blackman and husband, Terry of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Brad Lauer and wife, Jill, Bailey Dawn Lauer, Darrick Blackman and fiancee, Jamie, and Heather Pierce and husband, Ryan; one step-great-grandson, Mason; and relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church at Ash Creek with the Rev Paul Warneke officiating. Interment will be in the Ash Creek Cemetery south east of McCook.
Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call Friday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and Sunday from 1-6 p.m., at Herrmann Funeral Home in McCook.
