MCC teams ready for Region IX Tournaments
CASPER, Wyo. and SCOTTSBLUFF -- The McCook Community College men's and women's basketball teams will enter their respective Region IX tournaments this weekend with a little momentum.
The MCC men (14-16 overall, second place in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference with a 4-4 mark) have a two-game winning streak.
The MCC men will play No. 4-ranked Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo. at 7 p.m. central/6 p.m. mountain time Saturday at Western Nebraska's Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff.
"The guys have had a good week of prepration for the opening game of the Region IX Tournament against NJC," said MCC men's coach Ty Orton. "We have really come together the last two weeks and been playing our best basketball.
"We are going to have to go out and be fundamentally strong, execute the game plan and play as hard as we can very possession. If the guys do that, then we will be in contention to win the game."
The MCC women are 13-15 overall, but won the NCCAC title with a 5-1 record.
The Indian women's team takes on No. 8 Western Nebraska at 2 p.m. central/1 p.m. mountain time Sunday at Casper, Wyo.
"We are extremely excited about the oppertunity to play WNCC," said MCC women's basketball coach Michelle Orton. "We understand it is going to be a tough task. However we know we have a great team.
"We have had a great week of practice leading up to this game and feel if we play as hard as we can and run our offense and do the things we have worked on this week then we will have given ourselves an opportunity to win the game at the end.
"This is the most mentally tough team I have had in four years here and they are ready to play in the Region IX tournament."
Both games will be broadcast on Z-102 with the pre-game starting 30 minutes before tip-off.
