SCOTTSBLUFF -- Georgie Bernetta Steele, 88, formerly of Benkelman, died Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2007) at Scottsbluff.
She was born Sept. 19, 1918, at Mackey, Idaho, to George Jonathan and Edith Cora (Bush) Buhler, in a two-room house built by her father.
At age 3, she moved with her family to Trenton, where she attended school and worked as a waitress. She later moved to Parks, where she ran a restaurant.
On March 29, 1943, she married Thomas Earl Steele, at Stratton. They made their home in Benkelman.
She worked as a nurse at the Benkelman Hospital as well as at the Hester Home. She later became involved with Social Services where she assisted the elderly by helping them with their cleaning, shopping and other household duties. After retirement, in 1985, Georgie moved from Benkelman to Gering, to be closer to her son.
She attended several area churches, including the Methodist, Friends, and Baptist churches.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Earl Steele; sister, Thelma Hunt; and a niece, Aletha Hunt.
Survivors include her children, Janice Hofer of Denver, Colo., Larry Steele of Scottsbluff; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were today at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman with the Rev. Robert Sander officiating. Interment followed at the Benkelman Cemetery.
