McCook Devil Rays compete at Hastings meet

HASTINGS -- The Hastings Tigers, Columbus Knights, Grand Island Islanders, Lincoln Dolphins and the McCook Devil Rays took part in a competition at the Hastings YMCA Saturday.

More than 80 swimmers participated in the meet.

It was the first time McCook swimmers faced Columbus.

"Columbus is a very strong team and always good competition. It gives the kids a little more perspective of what the competition will be like at the state meet," said coach Tracy Flaska.

The McCook Devil Rays went with a team of only 15 swimmers.

"We didn't have our full squad there, which makes it difficult to fill relays. However, for the kids that did go, most of them did a very nice job."

Jakobi Blau, Keagen Blau and Kiah Blau all came home with one top finish.

"Keagen has been working very hard in practice, so it was nice to see him come home with a first place finish," Flaska said.

Another highlight was the amount of swimmers improving times. Those improving their times included:

Keagen Blau in the 50 yard freestyle; Kiah Blau in the 50 yard freestyle, 50 yard breaststroke and 50 yard butterfly; Kyleana Blau in the 25 yard freestyle and 50 yard freestyle.

Kristen Burns in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle; Kariah Castle in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard freestyle, 50 yard breaststroke and 50 yard backstroke; Taylor Geisler in the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle.

Kerrigan Klein in the 50 yard freestyle and the 50 yard backstroke; Hannah Kohl in the 25 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle and the 25 yard breaststroke; Kaylee May in the 50 yard freestyle and the 50 yard breaststroke.

Kelsey May in the 50 yard butterfly and the 100 yard IM; Nicky McDonald in the 100 yard freestyle; Jessica Premer in the 100 yard freestyle and the 50 yard freestyle.

Jamie Soderlund in the 100 yard freestyle, 50 yard backstroke and 50 yard butterfly; and Keegan Williams in the 50 yard breaststroke.

The Devil Rays will finish out their season with the state meet competition in Lincoln on March 3.
