ATWOOD?-- Orvis Leroy "O.L." Nelson, 88, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2007) in North Platte.
He was born March 30, 1919, at the family farm in the Tully Community, to Peter T. and Mary Francis (Goin) Nelson. He grew up in Rawlins County and graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1938.
He entered the Armed Services in 1942, serving in the African Invasion with the 591st Engineer Boat Regiment as an Amphibious Engineer. After returning from World War II he began farming.
In 1947, he married Veda Mae Henningsen. They lived on the family farm.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 46 for 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, David Lee; sister, Zelma West McDonald; and an infant granddaughter, Marsha Lee McCain.
Survivors include his wife, Veda of 59 years; son, Donald Jay 'D.J.' of Atwood; daughter, Shirley Vap and husband, Dale of Colby, Kan., Jane McCain and husband, Skip of?Colby, Kan., and Joan Kania and husband, Patrick of Newbury, Ohio; four granchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Atwood, with the Rev. Terry McGuire officiating. A private burial will take place at a later date in the Lone Star Cemetery in the Tully Community.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 9 a.m., - 8 p.m., at the Williams funeral home in Atwood.
Memorials may be given in his name to the American Kidney Foundation and the United Methodist Church.
