Grafels are excelling in collegiate athletics

Brothers Rusty, Egan and Teryn and their cousin Benjamin are contributing to the athletics scene at four different colleges.

Rusty Grafel is a 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior guard at Fort Hays State University.

He transferred from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, where he played two seasons.

Teryn Grafel Cloud County CC, Kan., track

Egan Grafel, is a 6-7, 220-pound junior forward for the Northern Illinois University Huskies in DeKalb, Ill. He transferred from Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan.

Egan Grafel averaged 6.1 points and 3.5 rebounds as a sophomore, despite battling a separated right shoulder, helping Cloud County to the 2006 Jayhawk West Championship.

During his freshman campaign, he tallied four points and four rebounds in 30 games played. He made the Dean's Honor Roll twice.

Rusty Grafel Fort Hays State, Kan., basketball

Egan Grafel was three-year letterwinner for Decatur Community High School-Oberlin.

As a senior, he was named to the Topeka Journal Capitol All-State Class 2A Second Team after averaging 22.7 points-per-game and 13 rebounds, while leading the state in blocked shots in 2003-04.

Egan Grafel was also honored in the Salina Journal All-Area team, Hays Daily News All-Area team and Wichita Eagle All-Class 2A squad.

Benjamin Grafel Sterlin College, Kan., football

He was a two-time All-Northwest Kansas League selection and participated in the McPherson, North Central (Kan.), Hutchinson, KU Barnstormers and Northwest Kansas League All-Star games as a senior.

He also placed third in state in the triple jump at the State Track and Field Championships.

Egan Grafel's NIU Huskies (4-17, 1-8 MAC) are coming off of a tough 80-74 loss at the hands of Buffalo on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon.

Teryn Grafel, also from Decatur Community-Oberlin, is a freshman hurdler at Cloud County.

Benjamin Grafel is a 6-foot, 193-pound redshirt freshman wide receiver for the Sterling College Warrior football team.

He started his high school career at Herndon and then transferred to Rawlins County-Atwood.

Sterling posted a 7-3 record in 2006, including a 7-2 record in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Rusty, Egan and Teryn Grafel are the sons of Keith and Roma Grafel, Oberlin.

Their grandfather is Donald Grafel, Herndon.

Benjamin Grafel is the son of Kyle and Cindy Grafel, Herndon.
