Bison wrestlers drop dual to Hastings

Thursday, January 18, 2007

HASTINGS -- The McCook High School wrestling team struggled Tuesday night against the Hasting Tigers.

Hastings won the dual 48-16.

"I really felt that the score would have been much closer than what it ended up," said McCook coach Nick Umscheid.

"Going into the dual we were giving up 18 points because of three open weight classes.

"But we still thought that if everyone wrestled hard and we pulled off a few upsets we would still be there in the end. It didn't end up that way.

"Our inexperience at certain weight classes really showed Tuesday night. We have several freshmen filling spots on the varsity roster and they are taking their lumps this year. They know that it is only going to make them better wrestlers in the long run.

"Some of our upperclassmen also didn't perform as well as we had liked. You can't have that happen in a dual and expect to win.

"In order for us to have had a chance last night we needed our younger wrestlers to not get pinned and our upperclassmen to get some bonus points for the team. It didn't happen and that's why we lost."

The Bison team did pick up individual wins from Tyler Brown, Sam Frazier and Matt Bair.

"Tyler Brown looked like he was really in control of his match last night (Tuesday)," Umscheid said.

"He ended up with five takedowns and that's what we like to see. We spend alot of time working on takedowns and it's nice to see his hard work pay off.

"It was also nice to see Matt Bair pick up a victory for the team and himself.

"Matt had been struggling and we just decided to let him loose. Normally he is very defensive on his feet but he was on the attack last night and it paid off.

"Sam Frazier really got the string of victories started at 189 pounds. I think that his win motivated and got Matt and Tyler ready to go.

"Too bad Sam didn't start off the night, maybe we could have carried that momentum through and the outcome would have been different."

McCook competes at the Gothenburg Invitational Friday.

The meet starts at 3:30 p.m.
