Frozen pipes

McCook Fire Chief Marc Harpham and Utilities Director Jesse Dutcher tromp through deep snow on the front sidewalk of the former St. Catherine's convent in the 1200 block of West Fourth, responding with other emergency personnel this morning to the building's blaring exterior fire alarm. McCook police officers Troy Fulgham and Jerry Calvin helped city water department technician Cliff Davis chip through inches of ice and packed snow to locate the water shutoff cap in the street in front of the building, as water from a frozen, broken main sprinkler pipe floods the building's first floor and basement. Harpham said it appeared that water had been running for some time before a neighbor heard the building's fire alarm and alerted officials. Harpham estimated $5,000 in water damage to the vacant building owned by Darren Brooks of Salina, Kan.
