ARAPAHOE?--?Genevieve Ann Schievelbein Wendland, 84, died Friday (Jan. 5, 2007) at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.
She was born May 10, 1922, at Arapahoe to Frederick and Elfreda (Monter) Hermes.
She graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1939. She went on to Kearney State Teachers College in Kearney. On June 14, 1939, she married Arthur "Jerry" Schievelbein at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Arapahoe. They lived north of Arapahoe, where she taught at country schools in Gosper County. After his death on Sept. 23, 1950, she married Herbert Rudolf Wendland at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Arapahoe. They lived north of Arapahoe and owned and operated Wendland Construction Company until their retirement in 1979. He died Dec. 26, 2005.
She received the Lady of the Year honor from the Land Improvement Contractors Association in 1979.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Arthur and Herbert; son, Lyle Schievelbein; son-in-law, Tom Mintun; and grandson, Ronald Schievelbein.
Survivors include her two daughters, Mary Ann Wendland of Omaha and Jane Wendland and husband, Mark Rindone of Omaha; brother, Leyland Hermes and wife, Dolores of Rogers, Ark.; sister, Darien Urbom and husband, Ward of Arapahoe; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arapahoe, with the Rev. David Otten officiating. Burial will be in the Arapahoe Cemetery.
