Raymond 'Ray' George Stramel, 86, of McCook, died Thursday (Dec. 28, 2006) at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

He was born in Topeka, Kan., to Clement and Anna Marie (Gibler) Stramel. He grew up in Hays, Kan. where he graduated from Hays High School in 1938, and from Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1942, as a physical education teacher and coach.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps in World War II and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in charge of a machine gun platoon in K Company, Third Battalion, 1st Regiment of the 1st Marine Division. In 1944, he was part of the landing assault operation at the Battle of Peleliu. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of K. Company prior to the landing at Okinawa. He was promoted to Captain and served in China as K Company's Executive Officer.

In 1946, he was married in Denver, to Betty Berdine Metcalf of rural Oberlin and they made their home in McCook. Following Betty's death on March 23, 1965, he married Nadine (Hoyt) Young on July 30, 1966. He worked until retirement for the United States Postal Service.

He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church, where he was a licensed chalice bearer and lay reader, a member of The Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and the Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of the First Marine Division Association, Chris Hanson American Legion Post 203, and the Benevolent Order of the Elks (McCook Lodge 1434).

He was an avid golfer and a member of Heritage Hills Golf Course and the Central Nebraska Senior Golf Association.

He is survived by his sons, Stephen Stramel of McCook, Randy Stramel of Lincoln, and Daniel and wife, Leslie Stramel, McCook; daughter, Marcia Morell of McCook; stepson, Alan and wife, Marilou Young of Huntington Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren, Amanda Speake Koperski and husband, Eric of Lafayette, Colo., Elizabeth Morell of Massapequa, N.Y., and Katherine Morell of McCook; three brothers, Eugene Stramel of Cortez, Colo., James Stramel of Hays, Kan., and Frank Stramel of Glenn Elder, Kan.; and two sisters, Irene Walters of Hays, Kan., and Rita Schmidtberger of Lawrence, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty and wife, Nadine; son, Samuel; step-daughter, Teresa (Young) Speake; and three brothers, Bernard, Gilbert and Clement Stramel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, 2 p.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Samuel R. Williams officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
