SUTHERLAND -- Henrietta Elaine Osmera (Hattie) Thompson 96, died Monday (Dec. 11, 2006) at Sutherland Care Center.

She was born March 4, 1910, to Ludvick and Frances (Ondrak) Osmera in the Elmer community of Hayes County and was the last child of a family whom homesteaded in the Wauneta area in 1893. She attended Elmer School through the eighth grade. In 1929 she and her mother moved to Wauneta. She lost her hearing at the age of 10, and eventually trained her dogs to bark, when someone came to the door or in the yard.

On April 12, 1934, she married Kenneth "Ted" Thompson in McCook. He died in 1997. She worked as a homemaker and also worked as a seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Emil, Joe, Frank and Ed; seven sisters, Eva Osmera, Mary Novacek, Tonnie Lantz, Anna O'Neil, Christina Phillips, Emma Johnson and Rose Smoots.

Survivors include one daughter, Jean Leibbrandt of North Platte; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. (MT) at St. John's Catholic Church in Wauneta, with the Rev. Mark Seiker officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday before services.

A memorial has been established to The Dogs for the Deaf, an organization that rescues dogs and trains them to alert the hearing impaired when needed.
