OBERLIN -- Byron E. McCartney, 88, died Monday (Dec. 4, 2006) at Decatur County Hospital.
He was born Dec. 12, 1917, at Cedar Bluffs, Kan., to Eltie and Bessie (Snodgrass) McCartney. He grew up on a farm attended Beaver Valley School and graduated from Decatur County High School in 1970. He then entered the U.S. Air Force.
On April 23, 1943, he married Phyllis Armstrong in Montgomery, Ala. They lived in Decatur County where he farmed and worked for the railroad and the Kansas State Port of Entry. They moved into Oberlin in 1970.
He was a member of Oberlin American Legion Post No. 70.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eltie and Bessie McCartney; one son, Evan McCartney; and seven brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis McCartney of Oberlin; one daughter, Carolyn Kuhn and husband, Howard of Topeka, Kan.; one brother, James and wife, Rebecca of Wheatland, Wyo.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Pauls Funeral Home with the Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Interment will be in the Oberlin Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be given to the Byron McCartney Memorial Fund.
