Katherine Dorogina Barnes passed away Dec. 3, 2006, at Hillcrest Nursing Home at age 85.
She was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Chita, Russia, one of five sisters, to Vassilie Dorogina and Domna Sidorovich Dorogina. The family fled Russia when she was a young girl, to Harbin, China. They moved to Shanghai, China, in 1934.
She grew up in Shanghai and graduated from the Russian Orthodox Commercial School in 1940. She lived in Shanghai until 1949, when she fled with 5,000 other Russian people to the displaced persons camp in Tubabao, Philippines.
She entered the United States on the ship, USS President Wilson, docking in San Francisco on May 5, 1951. She was met by her sister Vera and husband, Virgil Bethurum and their young daughter, Cathy, and returned with them to their home in Aurora, Colo.
She met her husband, Russel Wayne Barnes and they were married on Dec. 3, 1951, in Aurora. She became a U.S. citizen on May 5, 1957, in Denver, Colo. They moved to Glendale, Calif., where they resided for 29 years.
Upon their retirement, they moved to McCook, in 1990. They celebrated 41 years of marriage before Russel's death in 1991.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one infant son; husband, Russel; and sisters, Shura, Mary, Tonia and Vera.
Survivors include her son, Slava Ryaudin and wife, Olga of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Marina and Edward in Russia; two nieces, Cathleen Priester and husband, John of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Colleen Grant of McCook; two nephews, Dan and wife, Suzanne of Dickinson, Texas, and Ron Bethurum of Vista, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Opal Jones of McCook; brother-in-Iaw, Virgil Bethurum of Joshua Tree, Calif.; and many grand-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Herrmann Memorial Chapel in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating. Cremation will follow the service and inumment will be at a later date.
