WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- Lyda Matisek Harvanek 92, died Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

She was born Oct. 2, 1914, in a sod house to Joseph F. and Anna (Kytner) Matisek and was baptized into the Catholic faith.

She attended grade school at Hawkeye School No. 35 and graduated from Atwood Community High School in 1932 and complete "Normal Training for Teacher" and State Boards that summer. She began teaching at North Divide School No. 51 that fall until it close three years later. She also taught at Bohemian Center No. 59 between 1944-1945.

On March 3, 1935, she married Oral Rudolph Harvanek in Herndon.They lived between both family farms, settling at the Edward Harvanek farm in 1939 and lived there until 1992, when they moved to Atwood.

She participated in the community's 1935 play "A Run For Her Money" at the American Czechoslovak Hall. She was a member of the Saints. Cyril and Methodius and Sacred Heart Catholic Churches. She was also active in the Alter Societies in both parishes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Oral in 1993; one daughter, Louise in 1985; parents, Joseph and Anna Matisek; mother and father in-law, Edward and Aloisie Harvanek; two brothers, Joseph D. and Jerry Matisek; five sisters, Jo Matisek, Agnes Leitner, Mary Jane Duncan, Frances Wilson and Helen Mikesch Myers; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Survivors include her son James and wife, Diane of Arvada, Colo.; two sisters, Ruthie Matisek of Atwood and Sr. Anne Matisek of Montgomery, Ala.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m., at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atwood with the Rev. Galen Long officiating. Interment will be in Saints Cyril and Methodius Cemetery norhwest of Atwood.

Vigil and rosary services are today from 5:30 - 9 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home

Memorials maybe given in her name to the Saints Cyril Cemetery Fund, Atwood Good Samaritan Center or donors choice.
