Leonard L. Gonzales, 53 entered peacefully into eternal life on Nov. 27, 2006, at his home in McCook after battling cancer.
He was born Oct. 20, 1953, in McCook to Raymond Sr. and Fern (Ridgway) Gonzales. He was a life-long resident of McCook graduating from McCook Senior High in May of 1972. On Feb. 20, 1977, he married Penny L. (Clapp) Gonzales. Through this union three children were born.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Fern; brother, David; father-in-law, Charles (Bud) Clapp; brother-in-law, Ronald Clapp; and sister-in-law, Joni Clapp.
Survivors include his wife, Penny; two daughters, Traci Wilkinson and husband, Wade of Omaha and Roni Thompson and husband, Jeremy of Phoenix, Ariz.;, one son, Troy Gonzales and wife, Faith of McCook, five grandchildren, Connor and Kiley Wilkinson, Ava Thompson, and Josiah and Jaylen Gonzales; father, Raymond Sr.; three brothers, Raymond Jr. (Butch) and wife, Mary, Steve and wife, Sherry, and Paul (Joe); sister-in-law, Marlene Gonzales; mother-in-law, Freda Clapp; brothers-in-law, Royce Clapp and Randy Clapp all of McCook; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was involved in many activities through out his lifetime. He was a Golden Glove boxer and received several awards for boxing. All his youth he played baseball as a shortstop until his senior year of high school. At that time he started working with his father in the construction business as a cement finisher and general laborer.
After his mother became ill, he started L.L. Gonzales Construction and carried on the family business until he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May of 2006.
While his children were growing up he was involved in their activities. He and his brother Steve were baseball coaches of winning teams in the city leagues from 1988 until 1996. He then helped with field preparation for the legion baseball teams.
He had a big heart and was always selflessly doing things for anyone in need. He attended the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook, Nebraska and was a member of the McCook Elks Lodge 1434.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
