Kamilliah Brown, a sophomore at McCook Community College, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at the University of Nebraska-Omaha next year.

Brown was recruited to MCC from Kansas City, Mo. last year and as shooting guard was the leading scorer on the team, averaging 15 points per game, said Michelle Orton, head coach at MCC.

"She had offers from other schools, but UNO is a good spot for her," Orton said. Brown's parents couldn't come up and watch her as often as they would have liked, Orton said, and at Omaha they'll be able to catch more of her games.

"She was a good leader for the team -- we really enjoyed having her," Orton said.

A 3.0 student studying criminal justice, Brown received a two-year full ride scholarship to UNO. Other schools that made offers included Anchorage,?Alaska, Kearney and Regis in Colorado, but she chose UNO as it was closer to home, has a good criminal justice program and excellent job opportunities, she said.

She plans to join the military after graduation which will help pay for her master's she wants to pursue later.

Brown said she enjoyed playing at MCC.

"The girls here are really fun, the program and coaches were good and I really like the community," she said. She said she had to play harder at MCC than in high school because of the competition level.

Basketball is second nature to her, she said, with her whole family always playing ball. She and her older brother used to dribble the ball around the house when they were younger, she said, sometimes breaking a few things in the process.

"I've gotten better since then," she said.
