Carl Sterling Phillips

ATWOOD?--?Carl Sterling Phillips was born in rural Bent County, Colo., on Sept. 26, 1921, to Carl Spry and Pearl Elsie (Scaman) Phillips.
He died Oct. 27, 2006, at the age of 85 years, one month and one day at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Atwood.
He attended country school through the eighth grade. He left home at an early age to work for other people, one of whom was Dan Gates, the father of the famous actor Curtis Gates, known by his actor name Ken Curtis, who played "Festus" on the nationally known TV show Gunsmoke.
He married Dorothy Irene (Gunther) Scaman, on June 4, 1949, at Las Aminas, Colo. They lived in numerous places including Burlington, Gunnison and Las Animas all in Colorado and Wallace, Kan., Ruleton, Kan., Goodland and Atwood.
He was a hard worker and worked many different jobs including herding sheep, riding broncs, drilling water wells, ranching, truck driving, carpentry, farming and custodian.
They retired in 1993 to rural Atwood, until Dorothy's death in 2001. He then moved to Atwood and later entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
The joys of his life included his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved working with his hands. He also loved working with horses, hunting and fishing and feeding the squirrels that he made friends with, while living in Goodland.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; an infant sister, Edith Hazel and one brother, Charles Homer.
Survivors include his son, Danie Phillips of Belton, Texas; a daughter, Diana Phillips and Randy Solko of Ludell; five grandchildren, David Phillips of Las Vegas, Nev., C. W. Phillips of Ada, Okla., Michael Downing and wife, Julie of Plainville, Kan., Jeremy Downing of Atwood and Katina Horobik and husband, Brian of Stratton; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Westhusin and Trenton Downing of Plainville, Kan., and Alanna Beth of Hays, Kan.; five sisters, Evaline Kenworthy, Rosella Smith and Fern Morlan and husband, Harold all of Las Animas, Colo., Virginia Stoker of La Junta, Colo., and Darlene Sack of Peabody, Kan.; two brothers, Gale Phillips and wife, Eva Jean of Las Animas, Colo., and Don Phillips and wife, Charlotte of Eads, Colo.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Nov. 1, at the Williams Funeral Chapel with Fr. Galen Long of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating with interment at St. John's Catholic Cemetery in rural Atwood.
