McCook captures

sixtth straight

district title

From the opening kickoff to the final play, the McCook Bison football team dominated the Holdrege Dusters Friday night at Weiland Field.

The Bison outgained Holdrege 388-77 in total offense, owned time of possession and rolled to a 35-0 victory over the Dusters.

McCook, ranked No. 1 in Nebraska Class B in four polls, improved to 8-0 and captured the Class B-5 district title for the sixth year in a row.

Holdrege dropped to 6-2.

McCook has won 83 out of 100 games since Jeff Gross was named head coach nine years ago.

McCook won its 50th consecutive regular season game.

The Bison team's last regular season loss came in Week 3 of the 2001 campaign.

McCook posted its fourth shutout of the season and second straight.

"This was an opportunity to get a big win," Gross said. "This was something we were after. We didn't want a 14-0 win (against Holdrege). Hats off to the kids. The offensive line dominated. Hats off to the defense. I was really pleased with the effort."

McCook's Craig Fritz scored two touchdowns for the Bison -- both on 3-yard runs and rushed for 116 yards on 18 carries.

He now has 983 yards rushing this season and 13 TDs. He has eight 100-yard games.

Senior quarterback Josh Cherry threw two TD passes -- 28 yards to Dillon Goltl and 10 yards to John Swanhorst -- and ran for a 14-yard TD.

Three of Goltl's eight catches this season have gone for TDs.

Cherry was 5-for-5 in extra points out of the hold of Eric Rippen.

Cherry also ran back an interception for a TD, but it was called back on a penalty.

In addition to Fritz, seven other Bison carried the football. Sam Frazier ran for 76 yards, followed by Matt Berry 42, Cherry 40, Austin Barenberg 13, Zach Weiser 7, Caleb Morgan 6 and Nate Berry 5.

Cherry completed 7-of-9 passes for 79 yards. Goltl caught 4 passes for 47 yards.

John Mullen had 1 catch for 18 yards, Swanhorst 1 for 10 and Jon Bryant 1 for 4.

Jake Woodside led Holdrege with 32 yards on 12 carries. Blake Rademaker had 1 catch for 14 yards.

Holdrege quarterback John Goodwin completed 4-of-9 passes for 44 yards and threw the interception to Cherry.

The Bison will host Grand Island Northwest at 7 p.m. next Thursday at Weiland Field.

GINW won its first game of the season Friday. The Vikings defeated Gering 24-14 and improved their record to 1-7.

"Northwest is going to come here next week with one thing in mind -- to upset McCook," Gross said.

"They're going to throw the bathtub and the kitchen sink at us. We'll be expecting everything."

In other Class B matchups Friday, Aurora defeated Seward 38-20, Beatrice defeated Nebraska City 28-3, Cozad defeated Lexington 41-0, Crete defeated Waverly 40-17, Omaha Gross Catholic defeated Ralston 16-10, Elkhorn defeated South Sioux City 41-5, Lincoln Pius X defeated Norris 47-0,
