Southwest spikers take match from McCook

The Southwest Roughriders' varsity volleyball team defeated McCook in three sets Tuesday night at the MHS gymnasium.

Southwest defeated the Bison 25-14, 25-21, 25-21.

McCook dropped to 8-18.

The game was the final home game for McCook senior Sam Brown, a 5-foot-10 middle hitter. Brown is the only senior on the Bison squad.

Chelsey Quigley served 17 points with 2 aces for the Roughriders. Abby Houghtelling had 8 points and 1 ace. Ashley Weaver had 8 points and 4 aces. Morgan Potthoff served 4 points, Megan Conway 2 and Lisa Lord 1.

Potthoff had 22 set assists. Lord had 13 kills, Quigley 11, Ashley Weaver 3, Conway 2 and Houghtelling 1.

Alisha Weaver had 8 digs, Ashley Weaver 7, Kelsey Coolidge 5, Quigley 3, Conway 2 and Lord 1.

Lord had 3 block assists. Houghtelling, Ashley Weaver and Conway each had 1. Houghtelling and Potthoff each had 2 blocks.

For McCook, Joanna Bryant had 2 ace serves, followed by Hanah Swanhorst, Lindsey Hazlitt and Audrie Krepcik each had 1.

Bryant led in kills with 10, followed by Tara Powell and Erica Clapp with 5 each.

Clapp had 15 set assists and Hazlitt 5.

Swanhorst and Brown each had 1 block. Hazlitt and Bryant each had a half-block.

Hazlitt had 10 digs, Bryant 9 and Corinne Burger 8.

Southwest hosts Medicine Valley and Dundy County Friday night.

McCook doesn't play again until next Tuesday (Oct. 24). The Bison play Chase County at Imperial.

Cambridge beats

Hitchcock County

TRENTON -- Cambridge and Hitchcock County's volleyball teams battled it out Tuesday.

The Cambridge Trojans took the win after four grueling sets with the Falcons 25-18, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21.

Traci Keyser posted 16 points for the Trojan win. Keyser also had 2 ace blocks, 3 ace serves, 7 digs and 13 kills.

Shelby Schultz led the team in kills with 20 and had 6 digs, 8 points and 2 aces.

Kymbre Lytle put in 10 digs and Katie McCurdy had 19 assists. Frankie Petersen had 11 kills, 7 digs, 25 assists, 2 aces and 7 points.

Southern Valley

drops matches

MINDEN -- Southern Valley's volleyball team fell to Minden 25-10, 25-10 and Adams Central 25-15, 25-17 Tuesday.

Alyssa Steele led the Lady Eagles in scoring against Adams Central. Steele put in 7 points, 3 digs, 2 kills and 10 assists. Trisha Siebels, Cassie Brooks and Ashley Strickland had 5 points each. Strickland and Brooks both had 6 digs. Strickland also had 8 kills and Siebels had 2 digs and 1 block.

Steele teamed up with Hennessey Hogeland against Minden.

Both girls had 4 points for the Eagles. Steele also had 5 digs and 8 assists. Strickland had 4 digs, 2 blocks and 2 attacks and Jessie Sadd had 7 digs.

Southern Valley hosts an invitational on Saturday.

Perkins County

wins triangular

BENKELMAN -- Perkins County's volleyball team downed Dundy County 25-13, 25-21 and Wauneta-Palisade 25-21, 25-9 in the Dundy County triangular Tuesday.

The Plainsmen had two tight sets with the Tigers, before taking the win.

"We came out strong and had good net play from Sara Wilson," said Perkins County coach Renee Marquardt. Dundy County didn't let down and came back strong. Jessica Cornelius did a great job setting."

Cornelius led the team in assists with 17 and Mackenzie Hite had 10. Wilson put up 13 blocks, 3 ace blocks, 1 ace and 10 kills.

Debra Johnson had 7 kills, 2 aces blocks and 4 blocks and Brittany Ross had 5 blocks, 1 ace block and 3 kills. Kylie Croup had 3 kills, 7 blocks and 2 assists.

Perkins County downed the Lady Broncos in two sets as well. "Wauneta-Palisade was strong and kept attacking us keeping us out of sync," said Marquardt. Strong scoring by Ashley Day, Wilson and Cornelius brought us back into it and Carlie Sis kept us strong by attacking the ball."

Sis led the team with 8 kills, 1 ace block and 3 blocks. Hite was top in assists with 12 and Cornelius put up 6. Day had 4 aces and 3 kills and Wilson had 3 aces, 4 blocks, 3 ace blocks and 5 kills. Johnson also had 5 kills.

Season ends for

Rawlins, Cheylin

BREWSTER, Kan. -- The volleyball season came to a close for Rawlins County-Atwood and Cheylin Tuesday at the Kansas Class 1A Regional at Brewster.

Rawlins County defeated Cheylin 25-19, 25-13 in the quarterfinals and lost to Brewster 25-19, 25-12 in the semifinals.

Rawlins County finished the season 12-12 and Cheylin was 4-20.

Chase County

beats Hershey

HERSHEY -- The Chase County-Imperial Longhorns volleyball team swept the Hershey Panthers 25-10, 25-14, 25-22 Tuesday night at Hershey.

Chase County defeated Hershey in the championship match of the South Platte Valley Association Tournament on Saturday.

Chase County improved to 20-3 and Hershey dropped to 14-5.

The Longhorns are ranked fifth in Nebraska Class C-1 in the latest Omaha World Herald poll.
