ATWOOD -- William Robert "Bill" Steele, 79, died Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2006) at the Rawlins County Hospital in Atwood.

He was born Jan. 3, 1927, at Meriden, Kan., to Walter and Gladys Becker. He was adopted by Mabel Steele of Atwood on Dec. 11, 1937. He attended Blakeman rural school and graduated from Atwood High School in 1945.

He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 14, 1945, and was awarded a World War II victory medal and an Army of Occupation Medal. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 10, 1947.

He returned to Atwood and worked on the family farm. He also worked in construction, driving a gas truck and school bus, and at the sale barn. He also operated Atwood Lanes.

On Aug. 9, 1949, he married Mary Schmoker. He was a member of the Atwood-Colby IOOF Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his natural and adoptive parents; one brother, Donald Becker; one half-brother, Dale Hamilton; a sister, Betty Rucker; and two daughters, Judy Kay and Patty Elaine.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Bob of Atwood, and Terry and wife, Deb of Pottsboro, Texas; five daughters, Vicki Rader and husband, Chuck of Harlan, Kan., Connie Horn and husband, Roger of Almena, Kan., Peggy Goss and Ken Hiatt of Parker, Colo., Kathy Steinke and husband, Roger of Olpe, Kan., and Sue Steele of Atwood; two brothers, Wayne Becker and wife, Charlotte of Meriden, Kan., and Gerald Steele and wife Lila of Atwood; three half-sisters, Carol, Helen and Mary; one half-brother, Roy; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Saturday 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Atwood, with the Rev. Terry McGuire officiating. Interment will follow in the Atwood Fairview Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name to the United Methodist Church of Atwood.

Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday from 9:30 a.m until the time of service at the church.
