FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Troy M. Cowen, 102, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2006) at the Valley View Villa Nursing Home in Fort Morgan.
He was born Aug. 26, 1904, in Hopkins, Mo., to Manford and Mary Cowen. The family moved to Fort Morgan in 1918. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1923.
On May 1, 1927, he married Mary House. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was the oldest, living mail carrier in the United States.
He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Duane; a daughter, Barbara Atwood; one grandson, Kelly Fishel; two sisters Vancie Churchill and Austie "Betty" Robison; and five brothers, Harvey, Ernest, Harry, Glen and Leland.
Survivors include his children, Donald of Chesapeake, Va., Marilyn Fishel of Phoenix, Ariz., Howard of Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, Elaine Windsheimer and Jim, both of Fort Morgan, Winifred Waldron of Deer Lodge, Mont. and Chuck of Wellington, Colo.; 22 grandchildren and several great and great-great grandchildren. Extended family in McCook and Southwest Nebraska also survive him.
Services are Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at the United Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens.
Visitation is Monday, 2-5 p.m., at Heer & Jolliffe Mortuary Chapel.
