team titles
McCook's Heritage Hills golf course was teaming with area cross country runners for the McCook Invite on Thursday.
Chase County's Cara Kunneman won the varsity girls event, with Layne McConville of Southwest right behind her.
North Platte won the varsity girls title, with Gothenburg coming in second and Eustis-Farnam finishing third.
Chase County took fourth, Ogallala, was fifth and Holdrege was sixth. Dundy County came in sixth and Southwest was eighth and McCook was ninth.
Ryan Hazen of Maywood finished fourth in the Varsity boys and Brandon Shirkey of Dundy County took eighth. Chase County's Brett Gooden followed Shirkey in ninth.
Ogallala's boys varsity team dominated the invite. Ogallala finished first with North Platte following in second and Dundy County taking third.
Holdrege was fourth, Gothenburg fifth and Grant sixth. Chase County took seventh, Cambridge was eighth and Oberlin finished ninth.
McCook rounded out the top ten and Sutherland and Maxwell followed.
McCook's future High School cross country runners also got a chance to show their stuff.
McCook's Jessa Sughroue won the girls junior high 1600 yard run with teammate Kelsea Geschwentner following in second and Conner Larson also won on the boys side, with Cody Goltl finishing in fourth.
"I thought we had a great day considering the weather. We are not use to running in the wind and the heat," said McCook cross country coach Tom Sughroue.
"This year has been very good as far as weather goes, but mother nature decided we needed to have a touch of summer again. We handled the change very well.
"With the number of teams here and the competition they bring with them made the races very competitive.
"Our top finishers for the girls were Hailey Buddenburg and Molly Peck. These two ran most of the race side by side.
"On the boys side Michael Jordan was our top finisher. We ran well as a team finishing close to each other in the pack. We need to work on moving up through the pack to finish closer to the front."
