Basketball players from McCook Community College mug for the camera after tension eased and McCook firefighters determined that smoke at the front door of True Hall gym about 8 p.m., Monday evening came from the building's fire alarm system control panel. Fire Chief Marc Harpham said either the panel itself shorted out or there is a short in the system. Technicians from the fire system company were expected to arrive today to repair the panel. Harpham said it was a good thing that players and Coaches Ty and Michelle Orton were in the gym and that Ty Orton pulled the fire alarm. Harpham said about 15 firefighters were on the scene with the ladder truck, one engine and one ambulance for about a half-hour.
