GRAND?ISLAND -- Lewis W. Linnemeyer, 86, of Dannebrog went to be with the Lord Tuesday (Aug. 29, 2006) at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday at the All Faiths Chapel at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island. Chaplain Bill Forbes will officiate. Flag presentation will be presented by the Mickelsen-Larkowski American Legion Post No. 241 of Dannebrog. There will not be any visitation, Mr. Linnemeyer was cremated, but a book signing and an opportunity for friends to greet the family will be held on Thursday, from 7 -- 9 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cairo. Inurnment will be held at a later date in the Curtis Cemetery in Curtis.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Linnemeyer was born Dec. 7, 1919 on a farm in Lincoln County, to William F. and Lula E. (Wills) Linnemeyer.

Lewie was raised in Curtis and attended school and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1940.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp in 1941, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II. His duty included service at Saipan, Tinian, Tarawa, Solomon Island, Guadalcanal and Okinawa. He was discharged in 1945.

Lewie and Mary Nell Bybee were united in marriage June 14, 1953 in Curtis. Lewie was employed with Missouri Valley Construction Company as a bridge superintendent for 30 years, supervising the construction of bridges built on I-80 across Nebraska. The couple moved to Cairo in 1964 and then to Dannebrog in 1969. After retiring from Missouri Valley, he worked for Chief Industries. In August 2001, Lewie moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Lewie was a carpenter and enjoyed working in his shop. He liked working in the yard and tending his flowers. Lewie was a cowboy at heart and was seldom seen without his cowboy hat and boots. Lewie also broke cutting horses and took part in rodeos, mainly in the roping competition.

He was a member of the Cairo United Methodist Church, the Mickelsen-Larkowski American Legion Post No. 241 of Dannebrog, the Elks Club and the Platte-Duetsche Society in Grand Island.

Lewie was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Nell (Bybee) Linnemeyer; two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Stephen Allen of Kansas City, Mo., and Linda and Scott Davis of Maywood; one son, Steve Linnemeyer of Dannebrog; 11 grandchildren, Brian and his wife Tamara Lynn of Maryville, Mo., Bradley and his wife Michelle Lynn, Kelly and her husband Randy Glenn, and Benjamin Lynn, all of Kansas City, Mo., Heath Allen of San Francisco, Calif., Jason Davis of Olathe, Kan., Andrea Davis of Mission, Kan., Brooke Davis of Maywood, Chelsey Linnemeyer of Grand Island, Seth and TJ Linnemeyer of Dannebrog; seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Isabelle and Grace Lynn, Alyssa and Carter Glenn, Jake and Cade Davis; one brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Jean Linnemeyer of McCook and a sister, Doris Phillips of Cambridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Veda Saeger and Leona Nichols.
