Payne era begins for MCC spikers

McCook Community College volleyball coach Gary Payne

The McCook Community College volleyball program has a new coach in Gary Payne.

Gary Payne joins the MCC staff and takes over the MCC volleyball program this fall. Payne graduated from Chappel, Neb., in 1988 where he played football, basketball and ran track.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Persian Gulf in 1991.

He graduated from the University of Nebraska-Kearney in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education, majoring in Business Education and Physical Education and a minor in coaching.

He spent the past five years as Business Teacher in Weldon Valley High School in Weldona, Colo., and served as assistant volleyball coach and head track coach.

The Indians started the season with a 1-4 record at the Region IX South Sub-Region Tournament Aug. 25-26 at La Junta, Colo.

Sophomores on the 2006 McCook Community College volleyball team are Lindsey Hartman, Candace Smith, Brittany McConville, Crystal Zwickl, Kate Voss and Sara Cappel.

Freshmen are Kelsey Lemburg, Kelsey Kathman, Tracy Hayes, Jessica Black and Ally Reichert.
