KEARNEY -- University of Nebraska-Kearney volleyball coach Rick Squiers announced that setter Kayla Laird joined the UNK volleyball team.

The Hayes Center native most recently played for the McCook Community College Indians.

She was a member of the MCC volleyball and women's basketball teams, earning Academic All-American honors in both sports.

Also in volleyball, she was named all-conference, all-region and made the Region IX All-Tournament Team.

Laird, a 5-foot-8 junior, prepped at Hayes Center High School, where she lettered all four years in volleyball and basketball.

On the volleyball court, she had 500 assists and 100 kills her senior season. Her play helped Hayes Center win sub-district titles in 2001 and 2003.

Her addition means UNK's entire 2006 squad hails from Nebraska.
