ARAPAHOE?-- Margaret M. Smith, 83, died Sunday (Aug. 20, 2006) at the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center in Arapahoe.
She was born June 18, 1923, at Gosper County to William and Katie (Abood) Toomey. She was raised north of Arapahoe on the family farm. She attended school at Arapahoe High School and graduated in 1940.
On Oct. 17, 1945, she married Melvin C. Smith at the First Methodist Church in Lexington. They made their home northwest of Arapahoe where they farmed for many years. In 1962 they moved to Arapahoe.
She worked as a clerk for Lewis Brothers Grocery Store and Hemelstrand's Hardware Store. In Aug. 2003, she moved to the C.A. Mues Good Samaritan Center.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, UMW, Wesleyan Circle, In His Steps Bible Study Group, and Sunny's Sunday ?School Class. She was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Friendly Circle Extension club of Gosper County.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother Jimmy Toomey; and a sister Sadie Toomy.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin of Arapahoe; three daughters, Susan Orsborn and husband, William of Denver, Colo., Kathleen Keiner and husband, Daniel of Omaha, and Nancy Long of Holbrook; two brothers, Tofy Toomey of Lincoln and Amen Toomey of Modesto, Calif.; four sisters, Lucille White of Medford, Ore., Dorothy Vickland of Thornton, Colo., Louise Jones and husband, Herbert of Corona, Calif., and Darlene Toomey of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Arapahoe with the Rev. George Probasco officiating. Interment will be in the Arapahoe Cemetery at Arapahoe.
Visitation is today until 8 p.m., Wednesday from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Wenburg Funeral Home in Arapahoe, and prior to services at the church.
