ARAPAHOE -- Joyce Burke Cory, 84, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2006) at her home in Dallas, Texas.
She was born Oct. 4, 1921, at Edison, to Donnelly and Edith (Major) Burke. She was raised in the Edison area and graduated from Edison High School in 1936.
She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1942, and taught in Borger, Dallas, Hoekaday and Dallas Independent School Districts for 18 years. She also taught at the Trinidad, Colo., Junior College and at Geneva Junior College. She traveled to Europe in 1963 with the Dallas Theater Center production and accompanied groups of high school students to England at various times. She continued her education, attending West Texas State University, Canyon Summer Theater, University of South Hampton in England and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, earning her Master of Arts degree in drama.
She published the book "The Dallas Theater Center, an Idea that was Big Enough" and held a Texas real estate license.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include a brother, Glen Burke of Pueblo, Colo.; sister, Patty Tibke of Trinidad, Colo.; and a step-daughter, Cynthia Johnston, New York, N.Y.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10 a.m., at Wenburg Funeral Home of Arapahoe with the Rev. Ken Hildebrand officiating. Burial will be at Arapahoe Cemetery.
Viewing and visitation will be Monday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
