Philbert 'Dr. Phil' Stanley Harvanek

ATWOOD -- Philbert "Dr. Phil" Stanley Harvanek, 80, died Sunday (July 30, 2006) at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver, Colo.

He was born July 16, 1926, in Atwood, to Stanley and Rose (Heble) Harvanek.

He served, with distinction, in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Audubon during the Pacific campaign.

He earned a degree in optometry at Pacific University in Oregon and moved to Scott City, Kan., with his wife, Irene, in 1957, serving that community for 39 years, retiring in 1995.

Survivors include a son, Danny and wife, Dianne Harvanek; a daughter, Roxane and husband, Jeff Heyd; a sister, Loretta Runyon; six grandchildren; and two great-granchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be Friday, 10 a.m., at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church northwest of Atwood, with the Rev. Galen Long officiating. Interment will be at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery. Military rites will be provided at the cemetery by an honor guard from Fort Riley, Kan.

A parish vigil and rosary will be Thursday, 7 p.m., at the church

Memorials may be addressed in his name for St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Scott City.
