Liess, Vontz, Hinojosa represent area in Nebraska Shrine Bowl football game

LINCOLN -- The 2006 Shrine Bowl kicks off Saturday with its annual parade and game in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

Area athletes Brendan Liess, Waid Vontz and Abel Hinojosa will represent the south squad.

The players started their Shrine Bowl experience on July 13.

Hinojosa, of Chase County, was the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World Herald Class C-1 all-state defensive line, and the Huskerland Prep Report all-state. He had 93 total tackles, with 5 sacks. He plans to attend Chadron State College.

Liess, of McCook was named the Omaha World Herald first team all-Nebraska, Class B all-state as a junior and the Lincoln Journal Star second team Super-State and Class B all-state as a junior; class B all-state sophomore for the World Herald, journal Star and Huskerland Prep Report.

He finished his career with 3,499 rushing yards, 1,207 return yards, 353 receiving yards, 49 touchdowns, 59 solo tackles and 48 assists. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Kearney on a football scholarship.

Vontz, of Cambridge, is a three-time class C-2 all-state quarterback for the Omaha World Herald and the lincoln Journal Star.

He was a honorary captain for the Journal Star second team Super-State and multi-sport award.

Vontz rushed for 642 yards and passed for 1,379 as a senior, had 56 tackles and 3 interceptions. His career rushing was 1,623 yards and 38 TDs passing 3,521 yards and 24 TDs, 166 tackles and 10 interceptions.

In basketball, he was named the Journal Star third team Super-State and two-time Class C-2 all-state, World Herald two-time all-state.

In golf, he was an individual medalist as a junior. He helped Cambridge win state titles in football, basketball and golf and runner-up football finish.

He was part of the NAtional Honor Society, class officer, FBLA and FCA. He plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Kearney on a basketball scholarship.

On Monday the team traveled to the Chicago to visit the Shriners Hospital.

A banquet will be Friday evening with Nebraska native Russ Hochstein, a former Nebraska Shrine Bowl Player and member of the New England Patriots' NFL team.

Hochstein will be the key-note speaker.

The parade begins on Saturday on Havelock Avenue in Lincoln, with the game beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.

The game will be televised on NET1.

Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
