BENKELMAN -- Helen M. (Schwedes) Oakley, 94, died Sunday, (July 9, 2006) at Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman.

She was born on May 6, 1912 in Lamar, Colo., to John Henry and Mae Evelyne (Richardson) Schwedes. She lived n Lamar for a few years, before her family moved to Ponca, Okla. She received most of her education at Lamar and graduated from Lamar High School in 1932

On August 10, 1932, she married Oscar Otto Oakley in St. Francis, Kan. They made their home in Denver, Colo.

In 1941, they moved to their present home in Benkelman with Robert, Oscar's son from a previous marriage and their daughter Marlene Ann.

She was a employed as a housekeeper for the Old Moorehouse Hospital and later the Dundy County Hospital.

Preceding her death were, her parents; her husband, Oscar; two sisters, Elsi and Anna Clarice; and her step-son Robert.

Survivors include her daughter, Marlene Cawthra and husband Eldon of Benkelman; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were today at 11 a.m. (MDT) in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Kevin Wilson officiating. Burial followed at the Benkelman Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.
