ATWOOD, Kan. -- Nelly Stiefel Matisek, 75, died Thursday (July 6, 2006) .
She was born March 11, 1931 in Aarau, Switzerland, to Alfred and Hechwig (Meier) Stiefel. She was confirmed into the Christian faith. She completed her education in Aarau, including earning a degree from a local vocational college.
She came to the United States by boat in 1951 and worked as a nanny in Denver, Colo. Paul and Ruth Sager, of Levant, Kan., became her sponsors when she obtained her U.S. Citizenship in Oberlin.
On April 6, 1965, she married Joseph D. Matisek, in Goodland, Kan. They lived on the Matisek farm north and west of Atwood and were engaged in dairy farming.
Preceding her death were her parents, husband, Joseph; a brother-in-law and several sisters-in-laws.
Survivors include her son, Joseph and wife Amy, and one grandson all of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sisters-in-law Ruth Matisek of Atwood, Sr. Anne Matisek of Alabama, and Lyda Harvanek of Denver, Colo.
Services are Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Brantley Funeral Chapel in Atwood. Burial was Monday at the St. John's Cemetery in rural Rawlins County, Kan,
Memorials may be given in her name to the Good Samaritan Center in Atwood and the donors choice of Nature Conservation Society.
