Nebraska A's 4th at state, 1-1 at Sparkler Tourney
HASTINGS and DENVER -- The Lincoln Jaguars defeated the Nebraska A's 4-1 Sunday at the Nebraska Class A 16 and under state fastpitch softball tournament at Hastings.
The A's finished fourth in the eight-team tournament.
The A's dropped into the loser's bracket with a 4-2 loss to the Seward Storm Saturday. The Storm scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The A's stayed alive with a 6-5 extra-inning victory over the McCook Rebels 16 and under squad.
Kirstie Hiatt, from McCook, picked up the pitching victory and drove in the game-winning run.
The A's are competing in the 16 and under division at the 800-team Triple Crown Sparkler this week at Denver.
The A's posted a 1-1 record in pool play game Tuesday and will play two more pool play games Wednesday (at 1 p.m. and 2:50 p.m. MT).
The tournament portion of the Sparkler begins Thursday.
The A's defeated the Cheyenne, Wyo., Thunder 4-3 and lost to the Cincy Storm from Cincinnati 3-1.
In the 4-3 win over Cheyenne, Marissa Wallace, who joined the team from the McCook Rebels 16 and under squad for the Sparkler, pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks.
North Platte's Kelly Benes scored the A's first run in the first inning. Hiatt singled in the second inning and scored the team's second run.
North Platte's Joy Peterson walked and scored a run in the third inning.
McCook's Danae McCorkle scored in the sixth inning on an error for the A's fourth run.
In the 3-1 loss to the Cincy Storm, Hiatt pitched for the A's. She allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked one. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
McCook's Michelle McKenna doubled and scored Nebraska's lone run.
