HERNDON?-- John Wilbur Grafel, 86, died Wednesday (May 31, 2006) at Decatur County Hospital.
He was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Pueblo, Colo., to John and Elizabeth (Goltl) Grafel. He was raised on a farm in Richardson Township near Herndon. He graduated from Herndon School in 1937.
On June 19, 1941, he married Mildred Lucille Wudtke in Herndon. He farmed near Herndon.
He was a member of Immanuel Church of Christ, Herndon School Board, Soil Conservation Board, Farm and Home Administration Board, Herndon Equity Co-op Board, Rural Electric Association Board and the Herndon Cardinals 4-H.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Randy Lee Weber; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Sallans and Floyd "Smoky" Bryan.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred (Wudtke) Grafel of Herndon; a son, J.R. and wife, Phyllis Grafel of Herndon; a daughter, Bonnie and husand, Randy Weber of Gilbert, Ariz.; brother, Wayne and wife, Betty Grafel of Culbertson; sisters LaVerna Sallans of Aurora, Elaine Bryan of Oberlin, and Shirley and husband, Bill Jones of Quinter, Kan.; and four grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, at Pauls Funeral Home in Oberlin with Dale Sallans officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Memorials may be given in his name to the Diabetes Foundation.
Visitation will be Sunday, noon until the time of service at the funeral home.
