Oberlin's Richards, Simonsson place 4th, 8th at Phillipsburg

PHILLIPSBURG, Kan. -- Jonathon Richards and Breck Simonsson of Decatur Community High School-Oberlin placed fourth and eighth at the Phillipsburg Invitational Monday.

Richards shot a 36 in the nine-hole tournament and Simonsson fired a 38.

Jobey Black added a 42, followed by Andy Gilliam 43, Corey Cook 46 and Nolan May 48.

Phillipsburg edged out Wakeeney-Trego 148-150 to win the title. Oberlin was third with 159.

"It is money time and we will need to play well to reach our season goals," said Oberlin golf coach Dick Ahlberg.

Norton placed fourth with 160, followed by Phillipsburg B 164, Hill City 173, Osborne 174, Plainville 176, Stockton 182, Ellis 182, Smith Center 183, Phillipsburg C 188, Thomas More Prep junior varsity 191 and Russell 199.

The Oberlin JV played in the Hoxie Invitational Monday, but the tournament was rained out before nine holes were finished.

The Red Devils will compete in the Northwest Kansas League Tournament at Hoxie Friday.

The Oberlin golfers compete in the Kansas Class 3A regional at Phillipsburg May 15.

The top two teams and top five individuals from non-qualifying teams qualify for the Kansas Class 3A state tournament at Hesston May 22.
