Lexington -- Vernon L. Schauer, 80, of Lexington, died Thursday (May 4, 2006) at Plum Creek Care Center in Lexington.
He was born April 22, 1926, in Scott City, Kan., to Louie and Anna (Troester) Schauer.
As a young boy the family moved to Cambridge, where he attended school until the tenth grade. After school he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines. Upon returning to Cambridge, he worked for a local filling station and helped his father on the farm.
On Dec. 12, 1947, he married Phyllis Kutz in Cambridge.
In 1952, the family moved to Lexington. He hauled alfalfa and later worked for Walter P. Dunlap. He then went to work for Joel German. While working for Joel German, he became fond of land leveling and would later start Schauer Land Leveling. He retired in 1988.
Survivors include his wife: Phyllis Schauer of Lexington; sons, Steve and wife, Janet Schauer of Grand Island, Don and wife, Deb Schauer of Kearney; daughters: Linda and husband, Galen Meyer of Lexington and Kathy and husband. Mark Green of Casper, Wyo. a sister, Lucille Anning of California; a sister-in-law, Edith Schauer of Springfield, Miss.; 9 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Family Funeral Services were Saturday, at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington, with the Rev. Kyron BeDunnah, officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Lexington.
