BENKELMAN -- Alice Ruth Steele, of Benkelman, died Monday (May 1, 2006) at the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home in Benkelman, at the age of 100. She was born January 16, 1906' to Albert and Minnie (Gunther) Pettit on the family homestead where she spent most of her life. She attended Porter country school near her home.

On October 14, 1926, Alice was united in marriage to Joseph T. Steele on the family farm where they resided. She enjoyed life on the farm and loved her family -- especially her grandchildren. Her greatest joy was quilting and making quilts for every member of her family as well as many, many others.

Alice was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Bird City, , and the Sunshine Quilting Club.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Joseph in 1968; daughter, Beryl Main in 1982; sisters, Ruby Pettit and Freda Young; brothers, Bert and Ralph Pettit; and granddaughter, Roxie Steele in 1976.

Survivors include her son, Malvin Steele of Humbolt, KS; sister, Marie Whipple of Benkelman; grandchildren, Teen McKeehan and husband, Russ of Harrisburg, Bobbie Gohl and husband, Rick of Culbertson,, Annie Kehler and husband, Bud also of Culbertson, Steve Main of Kearney, Bud Steele and friend, Linda of Burwell, Wendy Engelman and husband, Terry of North Platte, Chris Calhoun and husband, Jim of Cliflin, Kan., Jo McCormick of Buffalo, Wyo., Jerry Steele and wife, Christina of Iola, Kan.; son-in-law, John Main of North Platte; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 4, 2006, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Forch Funeral Chapel in Benkelman.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 2 p.m. (MDT) in the funeral home chapel with Marcine Farmer. PMA officiating. Interment will follow services at the Benkelman Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Arrangements are under the direction of Forch Funeral Chapel of Benkelman.
