Marvin Dean Novak

Marvin Dean Novak, 73, of McCook died Friday (April 21, 2006) at Community Hospital of McCook.

He was born on Jan. 2, 1933, on a farm near Belleville, Kan. to Charley and Bertha Rebecca (Sanford) Novak. He graduated from Belleville High School in 1950.

He married Gloria Matilda Swanson on September 9, 1953 in Fairbury.

He entered the U.S. Army on April 28, 1953. He was honorably discharged on April 13, 1955.

After his time in the service, the family returned to the Wayne community where Marvin farmed. In 1960, he started working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Ellis, Kan. The family moved to McCook in 1970. Gloria preceded him in death on March 31, 1974.

He married Sandra Kay Johnson on Feb. 2, 1975 in North Platte.

He retired in 1990 after 32 years of service to the Bureau.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Good Sam's Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, McCook Eagles and the American Legion.

Proceeding him in death were his parents, Charley and Bertha Novak; wife, Gloria; and grandson, Jeremy Dame.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Novak of McCook; children, Cindy and husband, David Dame, of McCook, Ron Novak and significant other, Carmen Phillips, of Hastings, Gerald Novak and wife, Kristi, of McCook and Brenda and husband, Doug Hofman, of Fort Morgan, Colo.; step-children, Sally and husband, Bill Amador, of Aurora, Colo., Steve Path of Lincoln and Amy and husband, Eric Gydesen, of Grand Island; one brother, Raymond Novak and wife, Charlene, of Hesston, Kan.; one sister, Emma and husband, Frank Berggren, of Belleville; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.

The body was cremated. Friends may sign his book from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday or go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Randy Wahl officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, at 2 p.m. with full honor military committal.
