Bartley man shot through door of car

Tuesday, April 18, 2006

KEARNEY -- A 24-year-old Bartley man was in good condition this morning at Kearney's Good Samaritan Hospital after surgeons removed a bullet or bullet fragments from his left leg.

Sam Cunningham of Bartley was shot about 11:15 p.m., Monday, as he drove westbound on the city street south of the football field in Bartley. Red Willow County Sheriff Gene Mahon said this morning that Cunningham reported he heard a "bang" on his car door and realized he had been shot.

He was transported to Cambridge Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Good Samaritan in Kearney.

Sheriff Mahon said that officers are processing Cunningham's car this morning for evidence of the bullet, which cannot be identified conclusively until surgeons remove it or fragments from Cunningham's leg.

The sheriff said he and his officers know of no motive or provocation for the shooting. The investigation continues as officers gather evidence.
