GRAND ISLAND -- The McCook High School boys golf team opened the season Monday with an 11th-place finish at the Grand Island Invitational, The tournament was played on the Jackrabbit Run Golf Course. McCook was the lone Class B team in a field of Class A schools.

Senior Brandon Crick tied for fifth place with a 72. He fired a 32 on the back nine to get back into contention.

Garrett Rippen fired an 84 (43-41), followed by Aaron Goodenberger 86 (43-43), Mitch Hazlitt 88 (44-44) and Jack Latta 95 (47-48).

Creighton Prep shot a 292 to win and Lincoln Southwest finished 2nd with a 295.

"Penalty strokes and 2 or 3 holes that just got away from each of our players where the carded a high number were the problems for the McCook golfers today (Monday)," said McCook coach Dan Hilton.

"I can see where each individual could have saved 3 to 4 shots through out their rounds. We have to get away from those type of holes for us to have a shot down the road.

"Brandon Crick had a nice round and came back and shot the low score for a nine hole side with a 32, which helped him to a 5th place tie with a 72. Brandon was striking the ball pretty decent today but just had some putts slide by or he might have gone pretty low.

Bobby Knowles of Creighton Prep was the medalist, shooting a score of 69.

"It was a little high for a team score, but I am pretty sure we can improve upon that and get better down the road," Hilton said.
