BIRD CITY -- Ellsworth J. "Gus" Wilkens, 81, died Sunday (March 26, 2006) at the Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kan.
He was born May 19, 1924, on the family farm in McDonald, to Frank and Jennie May (Wolfe) Wilkens. At birth he weighed one-and-a-half pounds.
He attended Walnut Grove schools in Cheyenne County. He left school after completing the eight grade to help with the family farm. Because of his mothers ill health, he was also raised by his mother's sister, Goldie Wilkens.
On Jan. 3, 1945, her married Regina Mary Horinek, in Beardsley, Kan. The family operated their farm until retiring to Bird City in 1998.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Pius X Assembly, McCook Elks club, Bird City Saddle Club and the Tri-State Thrasher and Steam Engine Associaition. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina, on March 24, 1998.
He is survived by four children; Ardene Robert of Hays, Kan., Diane Rose Moro of Milford, H.H., Duane Paul of McDonald, and Daniel Joe of Johnson Lake.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bird City with the Rev. Roger Meitl as celebrant.
A parish vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, at the church.
Interment will be in the Bird City Cemetery.
