CAMBRIDGE -- The drivers of two vehicles lost their lives in an accident blamed on slush on the highway east of Cambridge Sunday afternoon.

Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Doug Petty reports that Shirley Grabast, 72, of Palisade, and Allan Heiden, 55, of Hampton, died at Cambridge Memorial Hospital following the accident at 2:54 p.m., about four miles east of Cambridge on U.S. Highways 6-34.

A passenger in the Heiden van, Heather Ekhoff, suffered broken legs. A second passenger, Kinlegh Ekhoff, was not injured.

Grabast was alone in her SUV.

Petty reported that everyone was wearing seat belts.

Petty's report indicates that Grabast was westbound when she lost control on the slush, crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with Heiden's van.

Ambulance personnel from Cambridge, Bartley and Arapahoe transported accident victims to the hospital in Cambridge, where both drivers died.

Petty was assisted on the scene by Furnas County Sheriff's deputies and ambulance and fire personnel from the three communities.
