Raymond Louis Grafel died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at the Community Hospital in McCook at the age of 87.

He was born Feb. 12, 1919 in Rawlins County, Kan., the son of the late August Paul and Mary (Wolfram) Grafel.

He grew up on the family farm and attended Herndon High School. He began farming due to the death of his father. In 1942, he entered the U.S. Army, serving in the African, Sicilian, Italian and European Campaigns during World War II.

In 1945, he returned to farming the family farm with his brothers.

On Jan. 1, 1948, Raymond married Barbara Dack at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. He has spent his life farming and raising livestock.

He was active on numerous boards and organizations in Herndon and Culbertson. He was a member of the Culbertson VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Grace Dack; and brothers, Harry Grafel and Harlan Grafel; brothers-in-law, Leo Crocker, William Brown, Clyde Dack, John Dack, Robert Dack and Lawrence Eisenbarth; and sisters-in-law, Agnes Dack, Doris Dack and Betty Dack.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Barbara Grafel of McCook; one daughter, Roma Sensel and husband Richard of Culbertson; and one son, Dennis Grafel and wife, Donna of McCook; six grandchildren, Crystal Garcia, Douglas Grafel and wife, Stephanie, Jessica Vrbas and husband, Joshua, Jared Niemeth and fiancee, Brett Stoddard, Christopher Grafel and wife, Roisin, and Randall Grafel; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmore Grafel and wife, Beverly of Culbertson; three sisters, Gladys Crocker of McCook, Beaulah Brown of Fort Morgan, Colo., and Donna Hoxie and husband, Ted of Lincoln; sisters-in-law, Patricia Grafel, Norma Grafel, Dorothy Nielsen and husband, Richard; one brother-in-law Richard Dack and wife, Karen, many nieces, nephews and friends. He was loved by many and missed by all.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating.

Interment with military honors will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook. Memorials may be given in his name and friends may call at Herrmann Chapel in Culbertson until 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m., to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
