No, it's not April Fool's Day yet

Tuesday, March 7, 2006
I came into the office today expecting the Kelley Park McCook Community College controversy to be the main topic of conversation.

Instead, I found out from city editor Lorri Sughroue that our next city manager will be pretty familiar to anyone who remembers the last city manager.

That's because he is the last city manager; John Bingham, who for reasons we don't know yet, has decided to return to his old post. Welcome back, John.

I'm sure talk radio will be humming today once the word gets out, but I think people need to remember that Mr. Bingham was the one who guided us through very difficult times, and perhaps he deserves to take the helm as we cross more placid waters. At least we hope things are calmer.

A co-worker suggests this might be the time to take another look at dropping the city manager form of government and going back to having a directly elected mayor. If you have observations on this issue, drop us a line.

Personally, I think there will be plenty of park space still available if and when MCC builds on part of Kelley Park. I think giving up that corner of the park is a small price to pay to help enhance one of the best things McCook has going for it.
